Optical sensing technology is the most precise and offers the highest resolution of the position sensing technologies. Incremental Optical Rotary Encoders

An incremental encoder produces a series of square waves as it rotates. The number of square wave cycles produced per one turn of the shaft is called the encoder resolution. Generally, incremental encoders provide more resolution at a lower cost than their absolute cousins. They also have a simpler interface because they have fewer output lines.
These encoders are ideal for applications where relative movement is desired. They are available as shafted or hollow shaft (blind and through) in package sizes from 1.18" (30mm) to 5.2" (132.08mm).

Absolute Single-Turn Optical Rotary Encoders

This type of industrial encoder provides a "whole word" output with a unique code pattern representing each position. This code is derived from independent tracks on the encoder disc (one for each "bit" of resolution) corresponding to the individual photodetectors.

 Hazardous locations require encoders, position sensors and other motion control equipment to be designed and certified to operate safely in potentially explosive environments. Flammable gas, vapor, dust or fiber can be ignited by internal electronics in the equipment if it is not properly protected.

BEI Sensors offers a complete selection of UL and ATEX certified encoders for hazardous areas. Certifications include UL Class I Division 1 and 2, and Class II Division 1 and 2, as well as ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2. Encoder products with this icon have hazardous area certification for one of the following: explosion-proof, flame proof, intrinsically safe, or non-incendive.

Explosion Proof   More Information           

• The enclosure of the encoder is designed to withstand internal ignition and contain the explosion without damage to the enclosure.
• Heated gases from an explosion that pass through gaps or joints in the assembly will be cooled sufficiently to prevent ignition of gases outside the housing
• Must be connected using gas-tight conduit
• Rated for Division 1 or Zone 1 installations

Intrinsic Safety   More Information           

• Limits the maximum energy that can be delivered into the hazardous location
• Has limitations on the amount of energy that can be stored within the body of the device
• Ensures that - even in double fault condition - the energy that is supplied to or stored in the encoder will not create a spark or heat the surface in a way that would ignite gas, vapor, dust or fiber in the hazardous area
• Must be used with Intrinsically Safe (IS) barrier. NOTE: An IS encoder installed without an IS barrier is not an IS system; in other words, an Intrinsically Safe encoder requires the concomitant use of an Intrinsically Safe barrier.

Flame Proof   More Information           

• The enclosure of the encoder can withstand internal ignition of volatilegas-to-air mixtures without damage to the enclosure
• Allows for termination using a certified cable glandand cable
• Cannot be used for Division 1 hazardous areas

Nonincendive    More Information

• Assures no sparking or hot surfaces will occur in the encoder under normal operating conditions (unlike intrinsically safe encoders which are evaluated under fault conditions)
• Acceptable in Division 2 and Zone 2 installations where explosive agents are present only in abnormal operating conditions
